FLAT COATED RETRIEVER

The flat-coated retriever (FCR) is an intelligent, attentive and active working dog, which can present his outstanding features not only while hunting. Originally, it was developed as a retrieving dog, and it is retrieving which is still his greatest passion. He can be used on all kinds of ground. His insensibility to atmospheric conditions, speed and intelligence make him both a superb working dog and companion.

Famillies appreciate his gentle, joyful but also strong character and affection. He is extremely patient and friendly towards children. For an experienced guide he is easy to train due to the quick understanding and outstanding laboriousness. He is an active retriever which needs to be kept busy. He is lively and temperamental with an intelligent facial expression. Sharing life with his master, he tries (like other retrievers) to please him. Water is his great passion. He will not avoid any puddle. A flat is vigilant but not noisy. He often demonstrates friendliness with people by greeting them enthusiastically or licking their hands. When he is closely bonded with his master, he tags at his heels.

The flat-coated retriever is a medium size dog (56 to 61 cm) with strong bones and proper elegance. He weighs 25 to 35 kilograms. He should not give an impression of being either overweight or excessively slim. His coat is of medium length, usually flat lying. The tail is well-feathered. Flats are usually black, more rarely liver. Their long, flat head has only a minimal stop on the eye level. The eyes are of medium size, dark brown to hazel. The chest is broad and deep. The hind legs are to be muscular and well angled. The tail is straight, merrily carried and almost always wagging. The thick and silky coat has very good undercoat and does not require too much care, although small undercoat hair can be found twice a year all over the place.

The flat-coated retriever belongs to the breeds which are easily trained. However, his playfulness may pose an obstacle while learning or concentrating. He needs consequent upbringing, which often requires a lot of time (more than that devoted to other retrievers) and intuition. He is a sensitive dog, which does not like rigid drill. He most appreciates working with a trainer who is patient and imaginative. Some unexpected qualities can be best developed in this breed while playing with the dog. That is why the flat-coated retriever's master and trainer's life is never boring.
